GENOVA

Following the success of ‘The Grand Finale’ in 2023, Genova will be a key stopover for The Ocean Race Europe in 2025.

Genova, Italy’s top maritime city and the Mediterranean’s largest commercial port, was the host city for the finish of the 2022-23 edition of The Ocean Race – the first time that the around-the-world race culminated in the Mediterranean and also the first time the fleet visited Italy.

The Italian city of Genova and The Ocean Race will extend their close relationship with The Ocean Race Europe bringing a fleet of foiling IMOCA race boats to the Mediterranean port in the late summer of 2025.

As host of two editions of The Ocean Race Summits, as well as the finale of both the 2021 edition of The Ocean Race Europe and the last around the world race in the summer 2023, Genova has shown itself to be a passionate and engaged partner in sport and sustainability, bringing Italian flair and hospitality to the Race.

Italy is no stranger to The Ocean Race. There were three Italian-flagged entries in the original edition which took place in 1973-74, and over the race’s 13 editions 11 Italian teams and over 130 Italian sailors have taken part.

Meanwhile, in June 2021 Genova successfully staged the finish of the inaugural edition of The Ocean Race Europe – a three-week, three-stage, race from Lorient, France with stopovers in Cascais, Portugal, and Alicante, Spain.

The city also boasts over a hundred glittering 16th and 17th palaces and an amazing selection of shops – including a pharmacy from 1650 – as well as historic eateries that serve the famous region’s pesto, focaccia and delicious seafood, not to forget one of Italy’s most famous exports: pasta in every imaginable shape.

Higher energy efficiency, green mobility, responsible fishing, and a healthy sea are the goals of the sustainability goals the city is aiming at to deliver a green and sustainable Grand Finale for The Ocean Race 2022-23.

A designated UNESCO World Heritage site, Genova has long been considered one of the most important maritime centres in Europe. The city is acknowledged as the yachting capital of Italy and in 2024 will take over as the European Capital of Sport.

PROTECTING THE OCEAN

As the home of Italy’s largest port, the ocean is vital to Genova. The city is dedicated to safeguarding its seas, with legal protections in place to support the diverse marine life in its waters.

The city is situated within the Pelagos Sanctuary, a huge protected area that was established to protect marine mammals, including endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtles and Fin Whales, from the impact of pollution, shipping and other human activities. Sunfish, endangered Cushion Coral and the critically endangered European Eel are also found along the Ligurian coast.

A Natura 2000 site extends along the coastline close to the city, as part of a network of legally protected areas across the continent that have been established to safeguard valuable and threatened species and habitats.

In November, the city will host The Ocean Race Summit Genova, which will bring together a diverse range of ocean advocates to highlight challenges and solutions to support a healthy ocean. There will also be a Generation Ocean Symposium as part of a special three-day event designed to highlight new ideas from youth contributors on ways to protect the seas.
